Late in January, a bystander in New Jersey saved Sammy off the streets and brought him to the Monmouth County SPCA shelter.
Even experienced staff members were shocked by the dachshund’s behavior. Every time someone walks by, the dog stretches his full body forward before drooping when he sees the person has passed, the shelter wrote on Facebook. “The dog sits and stares out the window all day as if hoping for someone to come pick him up. The dog was not a stray, but until it was established that its owner was an elderly man who had recently passed away, little was known about him.
Sammy had lost not just his owner but also a lifelong friend with whom he had shared a home. It was also disclosed to the shelter. Social media users were captivated by the dachshund’s story. Sammy’s post on Facebook attracted nearly 2,000 comments.
To help him find a new home after this unfortunate circumstance, the shelter published his story. Thankfully, several individuals responded. Before locating Sammy’s owner, the shelter staff reviewed all of the applications for around seven hours. The shelter is ecstatic with the turn of events for one of its charges. Hopefully, the new owner will be able to heal the dog’s spiritual wounds.
